Demo Update - 0.5.5 (On Steam)


hi! the demo is now also live on steam, but of course i'm still going to update the version on itch.

if you're interested, here is literally everything that's changed from the old demo (there's a lot)

additions

  • a whole bunch of new props in each map, also replacements for some existing props
  • added ability for parts of the level to appear/disappear between cycles (right now this is mostly used with some scrap piles, allowing for some areas to be accessible from locations they aren't typically accessible from)
  • navmesh now gets rebaked when doors finish moving (and doors now block the navmesh, so ai wont run into doors anymore)
  • added new townsfolk headwear
  • added sightings
  • added new voices for townsfolk
  • new custom ui crosshair (works at all aspect ratios now)
  • added the ability for bullets to be "ap" (they will deal more damage to robots and other non-organic entities and deal less to organic entities)
  • new attachments for each weapon (ap ammo, dragon shells, improved bolt, etc)
  • new ammo display (shows different bullets based on the weapon)
  • new death penalty type: true permadeeath (based on hard but also resets floor access on death)
  • added a ding when the elevator opens
  • changed placeholder guy's name to shopkeep (his actual name), also added a unique cloak for him
  • added new sounds for servant robot - added gradual analog movement for controllers (slow walking)
  • added taskbar icon (cant get rcedit to work in ci workflow so still has default icon in explorer on windows for now)
  • added storage locker to hub area (stash, can store weapons/upgrades in it to retrieve on death, stash gets reset when dying on hard permadeath+)
  • townsfolk now look towards the player when theyre near them
  • added new secret
  •  added pop up at end of demo content (right before reaching the f2m2 unique upgrade spawn)

changes

  • remade townsfolk animations
  • unique abilities (formerly upgrades) now only spawn in f1m2 (inside) and f2m2 (boss) - 
  • changes to cycle sequence audio
  • minor ui visual changes
  • revamped/improved various dialogues (you are now explicitly the "Traveler")
  • rework gun servant mini-boss fight
    • now spawns multiple gun servants in the arena, all of which must be killed to open the door
    • also strafes faster
  • rework spider heavy boss fight
    • buffed the main enemy (more hp, reacts faster)
    • also added spawn closets to the arena which will periodically spawn more servants while the boss is alive
  • slugs now have reduced knockback compared to the normal ammo type (the new dragon shells also do)
  • vitality now does not drain at all if at full hp outside the tower
  • changed pre-build up music for floor 2 (before you get to the boss arena/after the boss is dead)
  • new sounds for dialogue choices
  • switched from limboai to my own custom system for entity ai 
    • was waiting too long to update to 4.4, plus not having any gdextensions to wait on anymore allows me to update engine versions quicker. i also find this new system much easier to use
  • disabled dialogic history layer (wasn't accessible from controller + caused issues previously)
  • removed "ui scale" option in the settings

quality of life

  • now defaults to fullscreen
  • changed the name of "unique upgrades" to "unique abilities" instead
  • many many many changes to improve controller menu navigation (you can actually play the game entirely controller only now)
  • changed default controller button for opening the device to back instead of dpad down
  • added demo text to main menu
  • added buttons to wishlist on steam + join the discord to the main menu

fixes

  • fixed weapons not actually getting removed from the save file on death
  • fixed various music transition issues
  • fixed cycle timer resuming from previous time when starting a new game after quitting to menu
  • fixed unique abilities label not getting removed when all uniques are removed (eg in soft+)
  • fixed loading screen appearing over player ui
  • fixed crash that would occur when quitting to menu before talking to shopkeep when starting a new game
  • fixed not being able to pick up items on controller while not having any reserve ammo and also not having a full mag for the current weapon
  • mid air jump sounds now revert to default, instead of using the last surface that the player was on
  • animation audio no longer plays when ai dies (primarily for servant attack)
  • fixed being able to move on controller when the device is out
  • floor 2's boss music now loops properly
